The local trail SL FV 2 allows us to reach the foothills of Calderón Hondo, a single volcanic cone that is one of the most spectacular ones in the north of Fuerteventura.
While following trail 2, if we make a detour into this local path, we will have the opportunity to observe the cone of one of the many volcanoes that can be found in this part of the island. It is Calderón Hondo, a shield volcano with a bowl-shaped crater or caldera and a reddish substrate of great beauty.
In order to ascend to Calderon Hondo we will use a small local track SL FV 2 that starts at the junction with the main road once past Caldera Encantada. The track goes along the foot of this majestic volcano and continues in a gentle descent until it reconnects with section 2, near the village of Lajares.
Although this is out of bounds of the Nature Trail, if we take a detour along the other path, it is possible to get to the top of the volcano, where there is a scenic viewpoint which offers stunning views of the entire northern part of the island. With a great deal of caution, we can also go around the crater and peep into the 70 m deep interior.
