The Nature Trail of La Hoya de Huesca, with a length of almost 133 km between the towns of Agüero and Bierge, runs in a westerly-easterly direction through this region of Huesca to join up, at its end, with the Nature Trail of El Somontano de Barbastro.
La Hoya de Huesca is located in the transition area between the Pre-Pyrenean Sierras and the plain of the River Ebro valley. The Nature Trail initially crosses the Kingdom of Los Mallos, continues across the Sierra del Gratal and Arguis, reaching the Sierra of Guara via the valleys of Belsué and Nocito, to then return through Vadiello to the agricultural plain and the Somontano of the western part of La Hoya.
Due to this mountain-to-plain transition situation, the path offers a wide variety in terms of both natural wealth and cultural heritage.
The route crosses some protected spaces, such as the Natural Park of the Sierra and Guara Canyons, two Special Protection Areas for Birds (S.P.A.s of the Sierras of Santo Domingo and Caballera and the River Onsella, and of the Sierra and the Guara Canyons) and four Sites of Community Interest (SCIs of the Sierras of Santo Domingo and Caballera, of Monte Peiró-Arguis, of the Sierra and Guara Canyons and northern Guara). It also runs through other impressive natural spots such as the Mallos de Riglos, de Agüero and de Vadiello; the valleys of Belsué and Nocito; and rivers such as the Gállego, Isuela, Flumen, Guatizalema, Formiga and Alcanadre in conjunction with their ravines.
As regards cultural heritage, along the trail’s route you can visit numerous monuments that have been important throughout history, such as the churches of Santiago de Agüero, San Martín and Santa María de Belsué and San Miguel de Foces; the castles of Loarre, Marcuello and the Atalaya de Santa Eulalia; the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor in Bolea; and the Cistercian Monastery of La Gloria de Casbas in Huesca, all of which have some kind of listing as Sites of Cultural Interest, National Monuments or Historic Artistic Monuments.
This itinerary partly coincides with historic path GR-1 and, as you walk along it, you can link up with two other long paths such as the GR-16 in Nocito and the GR-95 in Riglos and Loarre. Some of the sections are easy to cover, even by bike, and are suitable for horse riding.
All of these attractions make the Nature Trail of La Hoya de Huesca an ideal itinerary for actively enjoying this combination of a unique cultural heritage with a spectacularly beautiful natural environment, within an unparalleled setting in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
